June 3, 1906 – April 12, 1975 Nicknamed the “Bronze Venus” or the “Black Pearl”, as well as the “Créole Goddess” Josephine Baker was an incredible American entertainer and actress. Baker, who died in 1975, inspired countless artists, like Whitney Houston, Shirley Bassey, Beyonce and was a muse to fashion designer Christian Dior and renowned artist Pablo Picasso.
Josephine Baker became one of the best-known entertainers in both France and much of Europe. Her exotic, sensual act reinforced the creative images coming out of the Harlem Renaissance in America.
Sometime around 1927, Baker performed her famous banana dance.

Her favorite on-stage accessory was a live pet cheetah wearing a diamond collar of whom she called Chiquita. Baker was also involved in numerous lesbian affairs including an affair with Mexican artist Frida Kahlo.
